What is an Undecillion?

An undecillion is a cardinal number represented in Great Britain by 1 followed by 66 zeros and in the U.S. by 1 followed by 36 zeros.

In the UK it might look like this when typed out:

1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

And in the US, like this:

1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,

I read somewhere recently that this number represents how many possible internet connections we have today.

It is impressive, indeed amazing that the number of possible connections has risen to that level since 2008 when (apparently) we had roughly one connection per person on the planet.  In other words, about 6.7 billion connections.

If technology has evolved at such a rate in nine years, I wonder where we will be in 20 years’ time – or even in ten years’ time?
